Qualifying day saw a very interesting challenge at
the top, with all the drivers enjoying the dry conditions
and setting very fast times, Al Harthy completed a
total of 11 laps in the 20 minutes session managing
to set a very good time of 1min 19.344 seconds (141.5
km/h) on lap 10 putting him 4th on the grid for Race
1 just 0.100 seconds away from 3rd place Ash Davies
(UK) who before the race was 2nd in the championship
standings.
“I had a very good qualifying session, the
time I set was the best time I set all weekend and
had a traffic free run; which is not always the case
in the 20 minutes session. The top 13 cars today were
all less then one second apart on the grid which shows
how tough qualifying is at this wonderful circuit”
mentioned Ahmad.
Race day saw rainfall, having qualified in 4th Al
Harthy managed to a great start from 4th quickly moving
up to 3rd place into turn 1, but with the cold and
wet conditions making the track very slippery the
rain got the better of Al Harthy when he spun from
3rd place on lap 4, managing to control the spin by
keeping the car on the track he quickly rejoined the
race in 13th position. With the rain still falling
Oman’s ace kept a cool head and challenged the
cars ahead of him with great overtaking maneuvers
passing five cars in the remaining 9laps moving him
to 8th for the first race.
“We had a very good dry setup on the car, but
with the rain falling on race day we knew we were
going to struggle with the wet setup and with the
limited wet driving experience I had, I made a slight
mistake getting on the power too soon which resulted
into a spin, I was happy with the fact I managed to
climb back up and pass the cars ahead, scoring points
is always important in this championship”.
Qualifying two was also a dry session and once again
Al Harthy managed to show his dry pace with a time
of 1min 19.710 seconds (140.5 km/h). Only 0.262 seconds
away from pole sitter Brett Parris (UK). Ahmad mentioned,
“Unlike the first qualifying session this one
was much harder for me as I was stuck in traffic,
luckily I managed to find some space and got a good
lap. Starting 4th is once again a good place to start
at Rockingham”.
With the wet track not drying out for Race 2, Ahmad
once again managed to get a blistering start from
4th on the grid passing two cars into turn one moving
him up to 2nd into lap 1. But with the Ahmad struggling
with wet conditions finishing 5th out of the 14-lap
race was the best he could manage at the very wet
and slippery Rockingham circuit.
“I am delighted with my performance, I learned
a lot from Race 1 and that showed on the track for
Race 2. All the cars that finished ahead had more
experience on the wet circuit. A dry race could have
been better as we had a better race pace then our
rivals. Finishing 5th means more points and that puts
me joint 4th in the Championship table after 4 races”.
